UNC Baseball Slams N.C. State 7-1

RALEIGH- UNC baseball didn’t have much trouble taking down N.C. State 7-1 last night in the first of a three-game series against the Wolfpack in Raleigh. Junior Tar Heel pitcher Kent Emanuel pitched through the eighth inning and tied a career high nine strikeouts. Colin Moran and Brian Holberton both tallied home runs for UNC. “He got better as he went,” says Head Tar Heel Coach Mike Fox. “It’s tough to start a game. You don’t know where the strike zone is, and you’re really having to pitch.” The Heels took control right, putting three runs on the board in the first inning alone—and Fox says that early lead was important in setting the tone for the rest of the game, especially in the hostile environment away from home. “It quieted the crowd and they never really got into the game,” he says. UNC now moves to 41-3 overall and 19-2 in the ACC, while N.C. State is at 33-11 overall and 14-8 in conference play. Game two of the series gets underway Saturday night at 6:30, and the series concludes Sunday night at...

The No. 1 UNC Baseball Team Continues to Succeed

CHAPEL HILL- The No. 1 North Carolina baseball team has handled high expectations successfully this season as it has suffered only two loses both to ACC teams after 31 games. Here is Head Coach Mike Fox on the season. “We got off to a good start and obviously expectations have been really high for our ball club since the very beginning and that is a little unnerving as a coach, but veteran team and I think our players just derelished those expectations and really had them of themselves,” says Fox. “As we all know we are only about half way through the season, but so far we’ve played at a very high level.” The Tar Heels opened the season 16-0, which was ended with their first loss to Miami in game one of a series. North Carolina came back to win the second two games and took the series. The second loss for North Carolina happened in game three of a series with Clemson. In the ACC Coastal Division the Tar Heels hold the top spot with a conference record of 12-2. Fox says defense has been crucial. “I really think the key to our club so far has been the fact that we’ve played well defensively,” says Fox. Senior first baseman Cody Stubbs has been named the ACC Baseball Player of the Week for his second time. Stubbs helped lead the Tar Heels to a 5-1 week as he...

No. 1 UNC Baseball Hosts No. 29 Miami Friday; Coach Fox Says Fill The Stands

CHAPEL HILL – The No. 1 UNC baseball team has started the season undefeated at 16-0 for the second time in school history and is five games short of its best start ever. Head Coach Mike Fox says everyone on the team has bought in to this year’s gameplan. “We have a veteran team—a lot of guys back from last year,” Coach Fox says. “Some news guys really stepped in and started playing well right out of the gate. We gained a little bit of confidence and we’re playing pretty well.” Pretty well indeed. Carolina is averaging almost ten runs per game and is outscoring its opponents 156-39 this season. Coach Fox says the success doesn’t just start with the kind of players he recruits, but the kind of people they are. “We try to recruit kids of somewhat similar backgrounds,” Coach Fox says. “That always helps initially. Then you just try to create that culture and when you’re winning, that helps as well. Leadership is so, so important.” North Carolina returns home this weekend to face the No. 29 Miami Hurricanes who started their ACC schedule 1-2 against Duke last weekdn. Coach Fox says annually this series is a battle for both sides. “They’ve had our number as of late,” Coach Fox says. “We went about a four-year stretch and they couldn’t beat us; we’ve had about a three-year stretch...
