No. 25 UNC Softball Blanks Elon Wednesday Night

CHAPEL HILL – The No. 25 UNCsoftball team earned its eighth-straight win Wednesday night in a shutout against Elon. The Tar Heels scored all their runs early putting up three in the first and three in the third carrying the 6-0 lead the remainder of the non-conference contest. Once again homeruns were the main source of scoring. Sophomore Amber Parrish tallied her fourth homer and batted two runs in, while senior Constance Orr hit her team-leading tenth to score three runs. Junior Lori Spingola pitched six innings and threw 11 strikeouts while only giving up four hits. Junior Sara Buchholz came in to close in the seventh to complete the shutout. With the win, Carolina improved to 32-13; Elon fell to 12-25. That game concluded a ten-game home stand for the Tar Heels who hit the road this weekend for a three-game conference series against N.C. No. 25 UNC Softball Takes Two Against JMU, The Second With Walk-Off Homer

CHAPEL HILL – The No. 25 UNC softball team extended its winning streak to four Wednesday night with a pair of wins against James Madison, 6-0 and 5-3. Junior pitcher Lori Spingola threw a shutout in game one against the Dukes and only allowed three hits while striking out seven. Junior pitcher Ashley Bone started the second game and saw her Tar Heels trailing 3-2 heading into the final frame. Spingola returned and got the win as the UNC offense followed her talented pitching with a walk-off three-run homerun by freshman shortstop Kristen Brown. In game one, Brown was also responsible for four of Carolina’s six runs and saw her first homerun of the night. Senior designated hitter Haleigh Dickey hit her 39th career homerun in the fifth inning of game one to add to the 2-0 lead. That shot gave Dickey the career lead in homeruns at UNC. With the pair of wins, Carolina improved to 28-13; James Madison fell to 24-9. UNC steps back into ACC play this weekend with a three-game series against UVA. UNC Softball Wins Weekend Series Over VT

CHAPEL HILL- The North Carolina softball team bounced back to win the weekend series over Virginia Tech 2-1 at Anderson Stadium. The teams played in a double header Saturday. Going into Saturday’s games the Tar Heels were up 1-0 on the series after winning 3-2 Friday night. North Carolina fell 6-7 in game two, but recovered with a third game win 5-1. The Tar Heels improved to 25-13 on the season and 6-3 in the ACC. The Hokies now stand 19-8, 1-4. In game one Saturday the Tar Heels were down early 2-0, but countered with two runs in the bottom of the first. After battling with a close score throughout the game, North Carolina wasn’t able to close out on top. Sophomore catcher Amber Parrish led the Tar Heels with three RBIs and four at bats. Parrish, senior first baseman Constance Orr, and freshman shortstop Kristen Brown each had three hits. Orr had two runs. Parrish, sophomore third baseman Stephanie Krider, senior catcher Haleigh Dickey, and senior second baseman Elisha Elliott each added one run for the Tar Heels. Junior pitcher Lori Spingola pitched through all innings and gave up nine hits and six walks. She struck out three. BUIES CREEK – The UNCsoftball team bounced back from two weekend conference losses with a shutout at Campbell Wednesday night. The Tar Heels put all three runs up in the top of the first. Sophomore catcher Amber Parrish batted the first runner in with a double to left. Freshman second-baseman Erin Satterfield was followed in by Parrish and senior third-baseman Haleigh Dickey with a single up the middle by senior first-baseman Constance Orr. Junior right-hander Lori Spingola improved to 14-9 on the season throwing the complete game and only giving up four hits and a walk while striking out five. UNC Softball Travels To Face Campbell

CHAPEL HILL- The North Carolina softball team is set to travel for a mid-week game against Campbell on Wednesday. Coming in, the Tar Heels are 22-12 overall and 4-2 in the ACC. The Camels are 20-11, 4-2 in the Big South. In recent play, North Carolina won a doubleheader 3-2 over N.C. Central last Tuesday, and fell to Florida State 2-1 over the weekend. Campbell also won a doubleheader over N.C. Central on Monday. Overall in the series, the Tar Heels are 57-14 against Campbell. Last season the Tar Heels defeated the Camels 9-0 in five innings at home. North Carolina offense is led by Senior first baseman Constance Orr hitting .351 with 34 hits. Orr has totaled 28 RBIs with 20 runs. Senior catcher/infielder Haleigh Dickey has recorded 32 hits 23 RBIs and five homers this season. Junior pitcher Lori Spingola has pitched 15 whole games with a record of 13-9 and has totaled 159 strikeouts with a 2.65 ERA on the season. Campbell is led by sophomore infielder Ericka Nesbitt hitting .460 with 40 hits and 12 RBIs. Senior pitcher Brittany Arnn has a 4-5 record with a 1.31 ERA and 47 strikeouts in 59.0 innings. LOUISVILLE, Ky. – No. 24 UNC dropped two games on Friday on day one of the Louisville Classic at Ulmer Stadium. The Tar Heels lost 4-2 to Wisconsin and to No. 11 Louisville to drop to 18-9 (3-0) on the season. Constance Orr finished the day with four hits and two runs, while Haleigh Dickey had two hits, a run and an RBI for Carolina. The Tar Heels left 11 on base between the two games and had three errors on the day. GAME ONE Orr led off the second with a double to left, advancing to third on a fly out before scoring on a single through the left side by Tracy Chandless. The Badgers drew two walks in the bottom half of that inning, and a single by Marissa Mersch then loaded the bases, but Lori Spingola struck out the final two batters to prevent any runs. But the next inning, Wisconsin’s Whitney Massey homered to left center, knocking in Stephanie Peace who was hit by a pitch. No. 25 UNC Softball Hosts BC In ACC Opener Saturday

CHAPEL HILL – The UNC softball team returns to the top 25 after a 15-6 start and begins ACC play Saturday in Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels have won nine of their last ten contests including all games in the Carolina Classic for which they played host and all but one game in the Wilson/DeMarini Invitational. The only loss came by the bats of No. 3 Arizona which handed Carolina a 7-4 decision. The Eagles are 4-8 on the season and are coming off six straight defeats. The chance to redeem those losses was halted when the last three scheduled contests were cancelled due to inclement weather in New England, Wednesday and Thursday.
