Carrboro drivers should begin planning a detour for South Greensboro Street for the summer.

The town announced upcoming construction on South Greensboro that will close the street beginning June 11 and expected to last through August 24.

According to the town’s press release, Woodhill N.C. LLC and the North Carolina Department of Transportation will be constructing a roundabout at the intersection of Rand Road, Old Pittsboro Road, and South Greensboro Street during the closure.

Carrboro Mayor Lydia Lavelle said it was originally planned to only close one lane during construction.

“During this engineering phase it was determined that there wasn’t a way to be able to have the roundabout entirely without. It was more efficient to close the whole thing I think for two months, rather than – not that we have the option anymore – which would have been to have one lane for six months,” said Lavelle.

Lavelle said that while this construction might be a burden to residents and local businesses during the two months, the developers are trying to confine the time period to the summer.

“It’s disappointing. I know the developer is really disappointed, and he’s apologized over and over. But it presents an opportunity for us, I think, to try to highlight our local businesses and have some plans in place where we hope our business won’t be impacted too much,” Lavelle said.

Carrboro town officials said in the press release that they are working on a proactive communications plan to help ease annoyance and keep customers shopping downtown.

South Greensboro Street has seen several street closures in the past two years, which have come as a result of North Carolina Department of Transportation projects to replace an undersized storm drain pipe and other construction associated with the South Green Development.
