Another locally owned store in Chapel Hill’s Village Plaza shopping center is closing.

Local “eco-retailer” Twig is closing its location in the shopping center on Elliot Road. A release from the business points to the “owners of the Whole Foods anchored shopping center have plans to reconfigure and update Village Plaza.”

Twig owner Shawn Slome has decided to retire from retail and offer the business for sale rather than relocating to a new space.

“As exciting as the prospects for opening in a new location may be, I’m ready to pass the baton to a new owner who can carry the business forward,” Slome said in a release.

After opening in 2007, Twig has offered “sustainable, organic and fairly traded goods to Chapel Hill and the Triangle.” Officials point to the retailer being awarded “Best Environmentally-Friendly Store” in Indy Week voting for nine consecutive years as a hallmark of the store’s quality and mission.

The closure of Twig follows the announcement that Grimball Jewelers would be closing after many years of operation at its current location in Village Plaza.

The Village Plaza shopping center is located in the newly named Blue Hill District, which has been a focus of redevelopment in recent years.

“Best case scenario is that Twig will continue with a new owner,” Slome said. “The store is profitable and I believe the business model is on target. It’s a good business opportunity for the right person.”

Slome solicited business inquiries in a letter to customers announcing his retirement.

Slome will be holding a retirement sale at Twig beginning on Thursday, December 7, at 9 a.m. in hopes of liquidating the store’s entire inventory and fixtures in the coming weeks.

Grimball Jewelers is also having a going out of business sale.
