It’s Safety Tip Tuesday on 97.9 The Hill, presented by Safe Kids of Orange & Chatham counties, along with Pam Herndon State Farm. Every Tuesday on 97.9 The Hill we hear from local family safety organizations as they share different safety tips and helpful reminders to keep us safe. These range from helmet safety, to proper prescription storage, and everything in between.

With the weather warming up, some of us may be thinking about ways to enjoy the water this summer. If you enjoy swimming or boating on Jordan Lake, or spending a warm day anywhere by the water with friends, you want to be sure to do it safely.

Blake Johnson, the Natural Resource Specialist with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, recently joined 97.9 The Hill’s Brighton McConnell on the air. He works at Jordan Lake to be sure our community stays safe on the water.

“First and foremost is definitely using your life jacket,” Blake shared. “Most folks have the life jacket on them, on their boat or in their truck, but it doesn’t work if you don’t use it.”

Just like you wouldn’t operate a vehicle while under the influence, you shouldn’t swim or drive a boat if you’ve been drinking either. “It’s dangerous to not just you,” he said, “but it’s dangerous to everyone around you.”

Blake left with a reminder that if you have kids in your group, it’s especially important to be safe near the water, because “they’re going to look up to you as a role model.”

Listen to Brighton and Blake’s full conversation below, and tune into Safety Tip Tuesday on 97.9 The Hill every Tuesday, made possible by Safe Kids of Orange and Chatham Counties and Pam Herndon State Farm.
