The withdrawal of Louis Tortora from the School Board race is a frightening testimony to the state of affairs in Chapel Hill-Carrboro. A person’s private legal political donations have nothing to do with their qualifications to serve on the School Board. No doubt, most candidates running for local office have themselves donated to political candidates. Yet, they aren’t scrutinized and ridiculed. Such intolerance goes against our First Amendment Rights to freedom of conscience and freedom of association which apply to everyone, not just liberals. Adherence to one particular political ideology should never be a requirement for guiding the education of our children. Rather, diversity of political opinion strengthens the quality of education because it stretches the mind. Therefore, discouraging the opportunity for such diversity on the school board flies in the face of our Constitution and sets a terrible example for our students. For decades, the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School district has been considered one of the best in the state. That reputation should be highly questionable now, considering the ease with which such narrow-minded forces are influencing who might serve on its board of directors.
