The Chapel Hill Farmers’ Market was founded in 2008 by local farmers, for local farmers. We are a truly local market that supports farmers and artisans within a 60 mile radius of Chapel Hill to offer fresh, quality farm and artisanal products year round. The market is vendor run and operated so every dollar spent helps support our local economy.  We are dedicated to educating consumers about the nutritional, environmental, and economic value of buying local, sustainably-produced farm products. The Chapel Hill Farmers’ Market brings our town and our producers “to the table” to create a sense of community and establish customer-vendor relationships so you can be sure about where your food comes from, and how it’s produced.

In addition to our container-grown herbs, perennials, fruit shrubs and trees, we sell our fresh blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, figs, muscadines, service berries, jujubes, native and oriental persimmons by the pint, and other fruits and nuts when available and plentiful.  We do not use pesticides on anything we sell.

Prodigal Farm, LLC

Picture

Prodigal Farm in northern Durham County is one of only two Animal Welfare Approved goat cheese dairies in North Carolina. Kathryn Spann, Dave Krabbe, and their stellar farmhands are slaves to about 250 goats that are never confined to a barn, and get moved to fresh pasture every week. They make their cheeses using only the milk from their own herd. Their family farm is on a 97-acre former tobacco farm, where they use both the pasture and the woods as forage for their goats. Our goats are all pastured on our 97 acre farm.  Most goat dairies aren’t pasture-based any more, but our herd gets rotated to fresh forage (which changes with the seasons and includes woodland) weekly.  This means our cheese demonstrates true terroir, a taste of place.  That place is our family farm, in an area where Kathryn’s family has farmed for 300 years.  We also produce delicious goat meat, and prepared foods using items produced on our farm and by other farms in our area.  Kathryn is chair of Durham’s Farmland Protection Advisory Board, which seeks to preserve farmland, both by using conservation easements so that the land will never be developed, and by helping farmers find more ways to profit from their efforts.

S&H Farm

Picture

S&H Farm came about because all those things that needed to be done were done! My husband no longer needed to be tied to a “place”, our daughter was on a path to her career and had established herself in a “place”, and it was time for me to find my “place”. We bought the farm in 2009; first tunnel up March 2010, second July 2010, third October 2010, and last up in October 2011. We are Certified Naturally Grown, since April 2011, because we believe in an organic program run by farmers. We grow most of the regular crops, but like to specialize in greens as much of the year as we can. We are excited to be a part of the Chapel Hill Farmers Market! Thanks for giving us this chance! -Vicki

T-5 Farm

We are a small family farm dedicated to producing “homegrown” chicken, eggs, beef and produce to provide local families with a healthy alternative to commercially raised products. Located in Southern Alamance County, North Carolina, we are implementing sustainable practices to bring our farm back to the the way it was when my grandparents “lived off the land”. We are not certified “organic”, but we have practically eliminated the use of chemical fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides to provide a healthy alternative to large-scale operations. All of our animals are raised without antibiotics or growth hormones, and are fed no animal by-products.

I will not only grow vegetables but also rice, and raise chickens, cows, turkey and other farm animals” At market she will offer a variety of fresh seasonal produce with specialty in Asian vegetables and herbs such as lemongrass, hibiscus, pumpkins, peppers and edible gourds.

Waterdog Farm, LLC

Picture

Waterdog Farms specializes in cut flowers, herbal teas, and specialty produce, all sustainably grown. To us, that means no pesticides, herbicides, and reducing outside inputs and use of plastics as much as possible.
Curious name for a farm, isn’t it? The farm is named after the Neuse River Waterdog, a species that is endemic to the Neuse River basin and its tributaries (where our farm is located). But it could just as equally apply to our lovely dog, Juno, who enjoys playing in the river when she isn’t patrolling the perimeter of the beds for critters.
We love new visitors to our booth.  Please stop by and sample our teas or smell our flowers.
