UNC softball’s Taylor Wike will begin her professional career after being drafted 18th overall by the Outkast in the American Softball Association’s inaugural draft. Wike, an infielder, started 225 games for North Carolina. She batted .355, slugging .565 with an .465 on-base percentage and logged 356 outs on defense, assisting 451 with a Tar Heel record of 48 double-plays turned. Orange County Veterans Memorial Holds Inaugural Memorial Day Service

The Orange County Veterans Memorial at Chapel Hill hosted its inaugural Service of Remembrance on Monday, aimed at recognizing the various military members and veterans from the local area. Although the memorial itself has not been constructed, a site was approved in 2016 on Homestead Road near the Seymour Center. The memorial will be funded by private donations with support and land donation from Orange County and additional support from the Towns of Chapel Hill, Hillsborough and Carrboro. Two Chapel Hill residents saved a young girl from drowning on Saturday, May 19, per a story from the Town of Chapel Hill. According to the story, Savannah Jastram and Norman Picard noticed activity at the University Garden Apartments pool around 9:15pm. Picard said two young girls were in the pool area, one was sitting on the edge while the other was bobbing in the water. North Carolina junior forward Luke Maye has announced that he will withdraw his name from the NBA Draft and will return to Chapel Hill for his senior season. Maye never hired an agent, meaning the possibility always existed for him to return to UNC for one more season.
