Dorrance Field in Chapel Hill hosted a soccer doubleheader on Friday. The No. 2 women’s team earned a 1-0 win against Virginia Tech in its ACC opener, while the men’s team drew 1-1 with No. 20 Notre Dame.

Evelyn Shores’ third goal of the season broke a scoreless tie in the second half and served as the game-winner in the women’s game. Shores pounced on a loose ball after a scrum inside the Hokie box and deftly slotted it through the legs of the goalkeeper to put the Tar Heels in front. The true freshman is now tied with Tori Dellaperuta for second on the team in goals.

Shores’ effort was part of a 17-shot day for Carolina, while the defense held Virginia Tech to just eight. Still, the Hokies kept UNC keeper Emmie Allen honest with a pair of shots on goal. Allen saved both to keep UNC’s fifth clean sheet in nine matches this season. The Tar Heels are still undefeated at 6-0-3 and will visit No. 20 Virginia next Thursday. It’ll be the team’s fourth road match against a ranked opponent.

In the nightcap, the men’s team jumped to an early lead against the No. 20 Fighting Irish on Martin Vician’s second goal of the season. Vician connected on a cross from Ahmad Al Qaq at point-blank range. Carolina held that lead until the 84th minute, when Notre Dame’s Daniel Russo equalized. Carolina didn’t lack for chances at a second goal throughout the night, sending five shots on the Irish net and 19 overall.

Though likely disappointed with the draw, Carolina is still undefeated at 2-0-3 and 0-0-2 in ACC play this season. The Tar Heels will host UNC-Wilmington on Tuesday.
