Ron and Aaron are traveling the GLOBE for the next four weeks with UNC Kenan-Flagler Professor, WCHL contributor, and international correspondent, Jim Kitchen. Mr. Kitchen will be traveling to the Pacific Islands for a month getting closer to his goal of visiting all 193 countries.
Well, actually 3D statuettes of Ron and Aaron will be traveling the GLOBE! Thanks to Lili Engelhardt Photography for creating these amazing sculptures.
We will be posting photos on this page each week and you will have a chance to guess “Where in the World” Ron and Aaron are by leaving a comment on the photo form below each photo. Everyone who guesses correctly will be entered to win the prize of the week and the grand prize of a Stay-Cation (details to come).
Clue 1: Today Ron & Aaron are visiting a chain of volcanic islands that were the site of nuclear tests from 1946-1958. The largest detonation was so powerful that it could be seen from Okinawa, Japan 2,600 miles away and debris from the bomb was found in cattle in Tennessee. Where are we?
Clue 2: Today Ron & Aaron have landed somewhere tropical made up of 607 islands and 4 main island states. Divers here can find the 3-foot long, super strong coconut crab or experience the ceremonial brewing of the sakau drink, which has numbing, calming effects sort of like kava.
Clue 3: Today Ron and Aaron are visiting a place that has the largest dolphin research facility in the world where you can even swim with trained dolphins. Can you guess where they are?
Clue 4: Today Ron and Aaron are visiting the first East Asian country to adopt Islamic sharia law as of 2014. As such, it is ruled by a Sultan in an absolute monarchy. Where in the world are Ron and Aaron?
Clue 5: Folks may be more familiar with Ron & Aaron’s destination today, it is nicknamed “The Lion City” and has a population of over 5.6 million. Can you guess where they are?
Clue 6: The islands Ron and Aaron are visiting today gained independence in 1978 from Britain and have a similar government to England’s. Despite English being the main language, about 120 different dialects are spoken throughout the islands. For those who want to visit multiple continents, the islands are also only 3 hours from Sydney, Australia by plane. Can you guess where we are?
Clue 7: Today Ron and Aaron are in a hot, humid, and tropical place made up of 33 coral atolls and islands along the equator. It was here that the first WWII battle in the central Pacific region started by the U.S. happened.
Clue 8: Today Ron and Aaron are in a archipelago of over 170 islands with 36 of them inhabited. This place has one of the highest literacy rates in the world at over 99 percent (by comparison, the U.S.’ literacy rate is estimated to be around 86 percent).
Clue 9: Today Ron and Aaron are visiting a popular vacation spot, which know wonder it’s so popular considering the weather is almost always perfect with temperatures that stay between 79 and 89 degrees year round. This paradise is the only place in the world where the red-and-white tagimoucia flower blooms. Where are Ron and Aaron?
