At a recent Chapel Hill Town Council meeting, UNC shared updates on several projects completed, under construction and in design as part of its semi-annual campus development report.

Evan Yassky is the executive director for facilities, planning and design at UNC and spoke at the council meeting Wednesday.

He said five projects are in construction. These include the Medical Education Building, UNC Health Central Generator Plant, National Pan-Hellenic Council Garden, the UNC Health Surgical Tower and the Curtis Media Center.

Yassky said construction for the Curtis Media Center, which will house classrooms, production spaces, and technical space for the Hussman School of Journalism and Media, is almost finished.

“It’s actually very close to completion now,” Yassky said. “We are hoping to wrap this project up later this spring for our school of journalism and media.”

A National Pan-Hellenic Council garden project is also underway. Yassky said it will recognize historically Black fraternities and sororities at UNC. The garden should be completed later this fall.

“This is a smaller project but impactful we feel toward creating an improved open space near what we call SASB the student activity services building in the southern part of the campus,” Yassky said.

Yassky said several projects are in the “steel framing” stage of construction. This includes the UNC Medical Center Surgical Tower, the new UNC Medical Education building and the UNC Health Central Generator Plant.

In addition to the five projects under construction, two projects are in design and two more are completed – the Morehead Chemistry Teaching Labs and the Knapps-Sanders Elevator Replacement.

One of the projects under design is renovation and additions to the Kenan Flagler Business School. Yassky said plans are set to add 140,000 new square feet.

“The new building will be adjacent and kind of connect to the McColl building – a very exciting large project for the business school,” Yassky said.

The second project in design is a solar demonstration site on the location of the former Horace Williams airport.
