The Lumina Theater in Southern Village will close this fall.
Officials with Southern Village developer Bryan Properties, which owns and operates The Lumina, confirmed that the theater’s last day of operation is scheduled for September 2.
“There have been changes to the national and local movie market that has caused our attendance numbers to slide,” officials wrote in an email, adding that the outdoor movie series will continue.
Ownership said that a community meeting will be held this summer to gather feedback from residents and visitors. No details were immediately available on when that meeting would be held.

It is ok with me I don’t go to movies
Sad news. I have not been in a while since it all seemed to be kid shows. Maybe they could be like Chelsea or become an AMC theatre. I will miss the option to go to this theater.
I have fond memories of going to movies there with friends. I hate to see it go, but recognize the ever changing landscape of Chapel Hill-Carrboro. Maybe it’ll be a climbing gym next.
Are you apostolic? I don’t either.
Thank for sharing such important (worthless) information
What a great venue for music, plays, productions. Perhaps a new focus can uplift the venue. Not enough community performance stages in the area.
What a great spot to transform into a community theatre/performance venue. There are not enough stages in the area for live entertainment performances. Variety Shows/Music/Specialty Films/ etc. This could be a great rebirth!
Very disappointed. The Summer Kids Series has been a family event of ours for years. Love being able to walk there for first-run movies.
