McLeod and Mildred Riggins Lecture: Edward S. Cooke, Jr.

“The Inside Story: Materiality and Agency in Wooden Chests” Edward S. Cooke, Jr., the Charles F. Montgomery Professor of American Decorative Arts in the Department of the History of Art at Yale University, focuses upon American material culture and decorative arts. This talk will focus upon two different kinds of case furniture: a chest of drawers made in rural New England in 1795 and a cabinet made in the Nagasaki area of Japan around 1600.

Ackland Film Forum: In So Many Words

This fall, the Ackland Film Forum explores the theme of photography in cinema—in everything from art films, to classic Hollywood gems, to recent popular films—in connection with the exhibition PhotoVision: Selections from a Decade of Collecting. November 6: In So Many Words (Elisabeth Haviland James, 2013). In So Many Words is a documentary that uses narrative filmmaking techniques to explore the inner life of a woman whose Southern Gothic childhood has both tormented and motivated her at each phase of her life.…
