7/5/17: Marvin Gaye “What’s Going On”
I really enjoyed my 4th of July. I spent part of my day emceeing the entertainment stage at Carrboro Town Hall with some great music. I was thinking how great it was that such a diverse group of people could get together and enjoy themselves listening to music underneath that huge shade tree in front of Carrboro’s town hall. Later in the night, I got to be a part of the big ol’ Town of Chapel Hill 4th of July Fireworks show. Close to 25,000 people, all united and celebrating Independence Day together in Kenan Stadium. We’re so divided these days, politically and otherwise, and amidst all the negativity that’s so easy to find we still have more similarities than differences. When you get right down to it, most of us want the same thing. Liberty, and justice for all.
When I finally hit the sack well past midnight, it was thoughts of brotherhood, peace, love – all that good stuff – that were running through my head. When I woke up this morning, it was the familiar voice of the Marvelous Marvin Gaye that I heard.
In my opinion, and the opinion of many others, Marvin was a real visionary and a musical genius, in
addition to his amazing vocal talent. The song streaming through my brain this morning was one of his masterpieces, “What’s Going On.”
“War is not the answer, only love can conquer hate.” I’ve got to agree with the man, and I want to share the song and message in it with you today in the form of a phenomenal live performance that you might not have heard before.
