7/10/17: Donovan Leitch “Hurdy Gurdy Man”
I heard the voice of Donovan P. Leitch in my head this morning. In case you don’t know, that’s “Donovan,” the mononymous Scottish icon who took part of the “British Invasion” as an icon of folk/jazz/rock/psychedelia in the 60s. He’s a talented singer, guitarist and songwriter – these days he’s a music producer, working behind the scenes to help other musicians find the sound they’re looking for.
He first became enormously popular in the UK through performances on a program called “Ready, Steady, Go!” and eventually became quite popular Stateside as well, with songs like “Sunshine Superman,” “Mellow Yellow,” “Catch the Wind,” and the rather strange “Atlantis.” He was close friends with The Beatles, going so far as to collaborate with John and Paul on some of his music. Donovan is also a card-carrying member of both the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Donovan is 71 now, spending his time in the quiet countryside of Ireland. My favorite songs of his have always been “Season of the Witch” and “Hurdy Gurdy Man,” and they certainly lean a little towards the psychedelic side of things. That’s certainly reflected in the music in my head this morning… and it’s pretty far out, man.
