6/9/17: The Easybeats “Friday on My Mind”

Thank goodness it’s Friday, and the weekend is almost here! The first thought I had this morning when I opened my eyes was “one more day, and then it’s time for the weekend!” I’m sure a lot of you were thinking along the same lines.

Almost immediately, a familiar song started running through my head. It’s appropriate, with the fairly obvious title of “Friday On My Mind,” by a great Australian band called The Easybeats! They hit it big in 1966 with this song, which went all the way to #1 in Austrailia, along with making the top 5 in the UK and climbing into the Top 20 here in the United States.

The Easybeats became known as the #1 pop group in Australia during the 60s. In a market dominated by American and British music, this was no small feat! The lead singer of The Easybeats, Stevie Wright (occasionally known as “Little Stevie”) passed away about a year and a half ago after battling drug addiction for some time, but I’ll always remember him for this song. The guy’s incredible energy on stage was downright contagious! In fact, you’ve got to watch this live performance video to fully appreciate the song. It’s not possible to watch 19 year-old Stevie bouncing around on stage without getting a good mood. It’s definitely the kind of jam you want to be hearing going into your weekend.
