6/30/17: The Turtles:  “Happy Together”

The Turtles came crawling into my mind early this morning.  They were another hit-making machine back in the late 60’s, fronted by Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman, otherwise known as Flo & Eddie.  The first time I ever even heard of The Turtles was when they hit it big with a Bob Dylan song—“It Ain’t Me Babe.”  The Turtles didn’t get really philosophical, I can’t remember that they ever did any protest music, and they weren’t known for leading any social causes, but they did have a good time.  They were once invited to perform at the White House, because President Richard Nixon’s daughter was a big fan.  The story goes that The Turtles actually smoked marijuana while they were inside the White House, which, I suppose, required a good bit of courage.

They were either very brave, or perhaps they were stoned when they got there.  But I digress.  The Turtles had a long line of cool, feel-good songs, but the one they’re most known for is “Happy Together!”  I used to introduce them by saying, “Here come The Turtles in their people-neck sweaters,” but that was during cold weather.  Since it’s summer, I’ll just say, “Here are the Turtles.”  It’s *THE MUSIC IN MY HEAD* on 97-9 The Hill…WCHL.
