5/15/17: Rod Stewart & Faces “(I Know) I’m Losing You”

I’m doing something different this week to celebrate the School of Rock Chapel Hill Grand Opening event on May 20th.  Starting with today’s “The Music in My Head,” all the way through the end of next week, I’ll be talking about my favorite live performances. Now, notice how I didn’t say “the greatest.” These are my personal favorites. You may have a totally different list, and that’s fine! Music, like all art, is subjective. I’d love to hear whatever you’ve been listening to, whether it’s something new or an old favorite. These are the songs that keep rattling around in my head, and I hope you end up enjoying them as much as I do. So, counting all way from #10 to #1 on the Ron Stutts Chart, here’s my top live performances!

Clocking in at #10, it’s Rod Stewart and Faces, performing live on the BBC! I always loved this band, mostly for how they always exhibited a great sort of rock n’ roll spirit, but also for how they played hard and loose, always seeming like they were having an absolute blast on stage. With Rockin’ Rod out front, Ronnie Wood – who’s been with the Rolling Stones for decades since his days with Faces – with the matching rooster haircut, Ronnie Lane on bass, Ian McLagan on keys, and Kenny Jones holding down the beat on drums.

In this particular performance, Kenny Jones lets loose with one of my favorite drum solos of all time as part of a cover of an old Temptations classic: “I Know I’m Losing You.” It’s a great band full of musicians who’d experience plenty of future success playing beloved music by one of the all-time greats, and having a hell of a time doing it in front of a crowd. When it comes to live performances, you can’t beat good old-fashioned fun!
