4/20/17: Don McLean “American Pie”
In 1971, Don McLean wrote and recorded a song called “American Pie.” It’s amazing, iconic, and more than a little mysterious.
The tune has been analyzed and scrutinized in every facet, from lyrics to composition, by just about every so-called music expert in the world. Fans have tried to figure out what it all meant too, and McLean remained quiet on the subject for most of his career, preferring to let his music speak for itself.
Obviously, it was at the very least partially inspired by the deaths of early rock n’ roll starts Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and J.P. Richardson, aka “The Big Bopper.” Before the song, the crash in which those three died didn’t have a specific name, but post-McLean the incident has been christened “the day the music died.” The lyrics in “American Pie” obliquely reference The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Elvis and the infamous Altamont Free concert. The song is supposedly about the “loss of innocence” and “heading in the wrong direction,” but the poetic nature of McLean’s lyrics mean that interpretation doesn’t mean all that much. Whatever you get out of “American Pie,” it sure does make a great song to pop in you 8-track player the next time you’re driving your Chevy to the levy.
