4/17/17: The Ronettes “Be My Baby“
I know exactly how this great song by The Ronettes got into my head this morning. Yesterday, we were flipping around the TV channels and came across this great documentary on the creation of “Pet Sounds,” the wonderful, groundbreaking album from Brian Wilson & The Beach Boys. It’s one of the Best of all time.
Anyway, Brian Wilson is an absolute musical genius. He heard music in his head that no one else could hear! Anyway, he became enamored with Phil Spector’s famous “Wall of Sound.” That was Spector’s invention, incorporating a whole studio of talented musicians, with a variety of instruments that normally wouldn’t be recorded together. Most of these people were members of the legendary Wrecking Crew. Brian hired them to create his own sound…and came up with Some really innovative stuff for “Pet Sounds,” featuring layered instruments, and voices. For a good example, listen to “God Only Knows,” which is a masterpiece.
I was thinking about some of the best songs, though, produced by Phil Spector, that featured the “Wall of Sound.” And the one that sprang into my mind right away was “Be My Baby.”
