3/20/17: The Pretenders “Middle of the Road”

Well, I went go a great concert last night at the PNC Arena in Raleigh. It was the Stevie Nicks/Pretenders tour, so of course the music in my head this morning was destined to be from that show, and I already played “Gold Dust Woman” for you. So, even though that was a highlight of the show, there is another song resonating in my head today.

It’s “Middle of the Road,” by Chrissie Hynde & The Pretenders. They rocked the house last night, I’m telling you. You know, Chrissie grew up in Akron, Ohio (which, of course they played “My City Was Gone) and it’s interesting… she said she never was too interested in high school. “I never went to a dance, I never went out on a date,” she said. “I never went steady. It became pretty awful for me. Except, of course, I could go see bands, and that was the kick.” She said used to go to Cleveland to see any rock n’ roll band she could, and that she was “in love” a lot of the time, but mostly with guys in bands that didn’t even know she existed.

I guess that’s something that helped to inspire her to make music, all these bands up on stage playing the kind of music she’d drive from Akron to Cleveland to see, crowds screaming and people dancing… there definitely is a kind of magic at rock shows, and I’m glad that Chrissie became a part of it.

She went to Kent State, lived in England for a long time, and started actively trying to get a band together while working at NME in London. Eventually, after a string of bands that didn’t take off, she landed a gig with what would eventually become “The Pretenders” and the rest is history. Chrissie is 65 years old now, but boy can she still bring the house down!
