3/17/17: Bruddah Iz “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”
You know how much I love rock n’ roll, right? Well, this ain’t rock n’ roll. Israel Ka’ano’I Kamaka wiwo’ole, better known as “Iz” or “Bruddah Iz” was a Hawaiian musician, all-around entertainer and sovereignty artist. It’s his music that’s in my head today.
Iz always had a big smile on his face, especially when he sang. He is absolutely revered in the Islands, and is a larger-than-life icon. Known for taking Hawaiian music back to traditional roots in a time when most songs associated with island life were being produced somewhere on the continental United States and were all somehow about surfing, Iz promoted traditional Hawaiian culture. A big man with a big spirit, Iz was huge in every sense of the word.
He died in 1997 at the young age of 38, but his heavenly voice has lived on through the years. Like most landlocked music fans, I wasn’t aware of him at all until he shared his great take on “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” with us in the early 1990s. That song has been featured in countless movies, TV shows and commercials. The album the song appears on, “Facing Future,” is the best-selling Hawaiian album of all time to this day.
So here it is, a big Hawaiian celebration of life and love from a man who represented “The Voice of Hawaii.”
