3/15/17: Creedence Clearwater Revivial “Someday Never Comes”
Creedence Clearwater Revival always sounded like they were from Louisiana. The band kept that swamp rock sound tightly woven into their music, but John Fogerty and his bandmates were actually from California. It doesn’t get much further from the bayou than that, but what an amazing string of records they put out together as CCR! So much of their music is still playing on radio stations and in headphones today, thanks to their timeless classic-rock sound.
Take a deep breath before you try and read out all these hit songs: “Proud Mary,” “Green River,” “Bad Moon Rising,” “Down on the Corner,” “Travelling Band,” their awesome version of “Susie Q,” “I Put a Spell On You,” and even a memorable cover of “I Heard It Through the Grapevine”! The list keeps going with “Who’ll Stop the Rain,” “Up Around the Bend,” “Run Through the Jungle,” “Long as I Can See the Light,” “Lookin’ Out My Back Door,” and “Commotion.” When a band has this many tunes that are widely known, they’re doing several things right.
My favorite CCR song would have to the “Fortunate Son,” one of the very best rock n’ roll protest songs from the Vietnam War era. You can’t set foot into a movie set in the 1970’s without hearing at least a little bit of CCR, and the lyrical musical protest they gave voice to.
John Fogerty was the first thing in my head today, singing a song I haven’t heard, or even thought of, in a very long time. It was “Someday Never Comes,” a song that never quite made it into the same category of Billboard hits, but still a wonderful addition to a stellar back catalogue.
