12/20/17: Sammy Hagar “I Cant Drive 55”

I know how this one got into my head….A couple of days ago, I got behind a car creeping along at 20 miles per hour on Weaver Dairy Road…..This was all the way from Timberlyne over to Erwin Road.  20 miles per hour!!!!  And there’s no way to get around it.  So frustrating…..and I had this song pop into my head…..by The Red Rocker, SAMMY HAGAR!     By the time I got to that roundabout just before you get to Erwin, I was singing out loud, “I CAN’T DRIVE 55!”  I mean, take that speed down quite a bit and you’ve got pretty much the same situation.  I don’t know what was going on with the person driving that little car, but I can tell you, that’s no way to start the day…particularly when you’re in a hurry, trying to get to work in the morning and you have to be on the radio in a few minutes!  (It’s interesting that as soon as I finished my rant about this slow driver, Jada took a call here at WCHL, and the person said, “Hey, what about the 25 miles per hour speed limit on Weaver Dairy Road Extension past Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard?   *&^%$#+X@#$%^&)

I’ve ranted about that one more than once before!  I have no idea why the speed limit over there is 25.  35 would be fine, but 25 is a little ridiculous.  Have you ever tried to go 25?  Especially, with another car right behind you…and you know that person’s getting frazzled because you’re creeping along so slowly.  I really don’t understand why the speed limit there is 25.  It makes no sense.  But that’s another story, and I want5 to get back to SAMMY HAGAR!

Sammy’s been around since the 70’s singing and playing rock and roll music.  He was in a band called Montrose….then he was a solo artist for a while….and he was recruited to replace David Lee Roth as lead singer of Van Halen, when Roth left.  The band had a huge amount of commercial success while Hagar was lead vocalist….and there’ a lot of debate about which sound was better…the band fronted by David Lee Roth?  Or the group fronted by Sammy Hagar?  I won’t get into that debate, but they were very different…and, in my opinion, they were both great.

Sammy wrote a book about 6 years ago called “Red.  My Uncensored Life In Rock.”  It’s a great read and as crazy as I am about music, I couldn’t put it down til I finished it.  Then, I was sorry it was over.  The Red Rocker is also quite an entrepreneur.  He started his own tequila company, putting out CABO WABO TEQUILA.  I once spent some time trying to track it down.  It’s good!  I don’t think he owns the company anymore, but I think it’s still out there at your favorite ABC Store.

At any rate….back to the music…the song that’s in my head today is “I Can’t Drive 55” by the one-and-only Sammy Hagar, who has admitted to loving fine, fast  sports cars and was once ticketed in California for going about 100 miles per hour….I think he even lost his license for that dumb move…..and in fact, that’s what prompted him to write this song….So here it is…today’s edition of *The Music In My Head*
