10/12/17: Electric Light Orchestra “Don’t Bring Me Down”
I don’t know why Electric Light Orchestra was playing in my head this morning, except maybe it’s because Jeff Lynne, the leader of that British group, was a close friend of Tom Petty. Obviously, I’ve been thinking a lot about him… I think a lot of us have. They were both in the Traveling Wilburys together, along with Bob Dylan, George Harrison and Roy Orbison. You don’t get to be a part of that club without having a membership card, and Jeff Lynne’s career definitely qualifies!
Anyway, the Electric Light Orchestra was formed back in the ‘70s, and led every step of the way by the multi-talented Jeff Lynne. He’s a great singer, a terrific songwriter and an extraordinarily accomplished producer. Listen to ELO and you can certainly hear a strong influence from The Beatles with a smattering of classical music in there – just in cast that wasn’t already being communicated by the “orchestra” in the band’s name.
ELO really cranked out the hits, songs like “Evil Woman,” “Mr. Blue Sky,” “Strange Magic”… the list goes on. Because of the prodigious talent of Jeff Lynne and company, ELO made it into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame relatively early, and it’s one of their most famous songs that’s playing in my head today. Here’s “Don’t Bring Me Down”!
