Stephanie Mavunga’s top-notch form was unleashed Friday afternoon inside Carmichael Arena. It proved too much for East Tennessee State to handle as the No. 9 UNC women’s basketball team raced away to a 95-62 win and improved to 13-1 on the season.

Mavunga scored a career-high 26 points to lead the Tar Heels past the overmatched Buccaneers, who dropped to 8-7 overall.

Mavunga shot 13 of 14 from the floor for the Tar Heels, who shot a season-best 57 percent from the floor.

”Allisha (Gray) was kind of giving me a hard time because I put these shoes on right before the game, and I’ve never worn them before,” Mavunga says. ”She was like, ‘That’s not a good idea.’ I was like, ‘If it’s not, I’ll change them at half.’ ”

Well, Mavunga made all seven of her attempts in the first half, so the shoes weren’t going anywhere.

With the Tar Heels beginning ACC play Sunday against rival N.C. State, the shoes might stay for at least another game.

”You’re going to wear them again,”UNC head coach Sylvia Hatchell says to Mavunga.

Jamie Cherry added 13 points and Jessica Washington had 10 points for UNC.

Gray turned in a double-double, recording 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Tar Heels.

Next up for Carolina is a home contest against the Wolfpack of N.C. State Sunday at 3 p.m. inside Carmichael Arena. The game will be broadcast on 97.9 FM, WCHL.
