The eleventh-ranked North Carolina women’s basketball team pulled off a 70-54 upset over No. 5 Stanford in the opening round of the Rainbow Wahine Shootout in Honolulu Friday and improved to 5-0 on the season.

Senior guard Latifah Coleman led the Heels to their 5th straight victory with a career high 19 points as well as 6 rebounds and 6 assists.

This makes Stanford’s second loss in three games after an impressive 33-4 record in their 2013-2014 campaign. They are now 3-2 on the season.

Stanford shot a season-low 31 percent from the field Friday night and guard Lili Thompson was the only player for the Cardinal to score in double-digits with 15 points.

Carolina led the entire game behind Coleman’s breakout performance as well as contributions from junior Xylina McDaniel with 15 points and sophomore Stephanie Mavunga, who tallied 10 points and eight rebounds.

UNC has now beaten the Cardinal for the first time in history, coming in at 0-3 against Stanford before the match.

The Tar Heels will play Prairie View A&M Saturday.
