CHAPEL HILL– The 20-6 Tar Heel women’s basketball team moved up six spots to No. 11 in the latest AP Top 25 poll released Monday.

It was a standout week of play for the UNC women as they upset No. 7 Duke at Cameron Indoor, pummeled Pittsburgh at home and handed No. 14 N.C. State its first home loss of the season.

Undefeated Connecticut remains atop the rankings while ACC members Notre Dame, Duke and Maryland all appear in the top ten. No. 7 Duke and No. 8 Maryland tangle Monday night at 7 p.m. on ESPN2 as a part of the ACC’s Big Monday.

Carolina’s freshman sensation Diamond DeShields was named ESPN’s National Player of the Week Monday following her legendary performances against Duke and N.C. State. DeShields put up more than 30 points in each of those contests in hostile environments.

As for the men, the Tar Heels are inching closer to entering the Top 25 following a victory over previously ranked Pittsburgh Saturday. Carolina received 54 votes in the AP poll and 22 votes in the USA Today Coaches poll this week.

Undefeated Syracuse remains the No. 1 team in the nation after scraping by both Pitt and N.C.State last week. The Orange received all but one vote for the top spot in both polls.

20-5 Duke moved up to No. 5 in the AP and No. 6 in USA Today poll. The Tar Heels will get their crack at another win over a ranked opponent this Thursday when they take on the Blue Devils.

Carolina’s James Michael McAdoo was named ACC Player of the Week Monday following his 24 points and 12 rebounds in the Pittsburgh contest.
