A few weeks ago, we discussed getting ready for the New Year. If you followed through and have a plan for next year, now is the time to take a break and celebrate. Be sure to take care of the people around you that are helping you deliver results.
Team: “Team” can be overused. In my definition it is the people on your payroll that keep the business moving day to day. Have you thanked them for all they do to retain customers and acknowledge when they were creative at solving a concern or saved you money? Did anyone go out and find a new revenue stream? Spot rewards or a small gathering to recognize efforts can go a long way. An in-person sincere thanks can go a long way. If you have a geographically distributed team, pick up the phone and call – not text!
Extended Team: Suppliers, maintenance and repair, your team of professionals and more fall into this category. Think of when you may have had a surge order and needed to get product on short notice. Did they step up and help you win? Did you have an equipment failure that would have taken you offline for days and the repair person went out of their way to find a part at a reasonable cost. How about your accountant or attorney – did they solve a critical business issue for you? Thank them – they are worth their weight in gold!
Friends and Family: All too often we forget to thank those around us for their support and flexibility. As a small business owner, how many time have you had to change plans with little or no notice? Are they your sounding board after a long hard day? Take time out and break bread uninterrupted to show your appreciation.
Yourself: Sometimes the most difficult thing to do is ensure you take a break. Delegate and allow your team to grow. Amazing how even a short walk or other activity away from day to day work can let your brain and body relax and come up with breakthrough solutions. Sometimes it is one you have been stuck on for days and in an instant, have a possible solution. Balance is key in life. Just ask Mr. Miyagi from the Karate Kid!
Think Through: Take care of yourself and the people around you. Show sincere appreciation for everyone contributing to your business. No matter how large or small your business, it is the people around you that can make a big difference in your business and attitude. Make that a daily and not annual habit. Go ahead – schedule that long weekend today!
