Krave manager Josh Pardue behind the bar ready to serve kava

In the tradition of their signature, South-Pacific inspired drink Kava, Carrboro’s own Krave is celebrating their one-year anniversary in classic luau style this Saturday, April 2nd.

The event is free and open to the public. Festivities will include a complimentary luau buffet, including a whole pig to be roasted on site for 24 hours, authentic luau dancers starting at 2pm, music, dance floor, and Krave’s own selection of teas, mates, and (of course) kava will be served at the bar (note this is an alcohol free event).

“We’re excited to be celebrating our first year at Krave,” said Krave owner Elizabeth Gardner, a UNC Chapel Hill alumna and Hillsborough native. “We have so many regular customers who really have become our friends, and we thank them for helping us reach this milestone.”

Krave is one of only a handful of cafes serving traditional kava in the state of North Carolina. At Krave, kava is served in the same traditional way that it’s been done in the South Pacific for centuries. Krave also serves hot yerba mates traditionally consumed in South America in a variety of tropical flavors, and ketum tea. Gardner expanded the menu last summer to include Krave’s own version of traditional Cuban coffee – a café con leche flavored with coconut sugar.

What is kava? It is shrub that is grown for up to 11 years before its root is harvested to make the drink. The drink itself has an earthy taste with peppery notes that leaves consumers with a deeply calming effect.

If you cannot make the luau on Saturday, Krave is always finding ways to engage the community. It is a proud participant of Chapel Hill’s 2nd Friday Art Walk and even hosts their own event “Kava with the Cops” where residents are encouraged to meet members of the Carrboro Police Department.
