Summer 2014 color and fringe

Whether your Memorial Day Weekend consisted of a staycay or a vaycay, either way it’s the unofficial start of summer. And that means it’s time to assess your summer wardrobe essentials. What’s hot? Plenty of repeat trends that you may already own and some new twists. You decide what works for your taste and look. No need to embrace them all. Here’s a list to get your summer styling started:

Be Radiant! – When in doubt, think pink. The 2014 Pantone color of the year is a pinky purple known as “Radiant Orchid.” The name says it all. This radiant hue has the power to brighten any spring or summer look.

Everything’s Coming Up Roses. – The floral trend is everywhere – dresses, tops, bottoms. Even for the guys! Last week, WCHL’s own Ron Stutts sported a flower power shirt.

Sparkle and Shine. – Metallics are major. Think iridescent, if you dare. And feel free to mix metals. Take note of wedges and flats with metallic details.

Say it like you mean it. – Clothes, especially tees and tanks, do all the talking this summer with wordy graphics. Make a statement – literally!

Crop It. – Think twice about that second cupcake. Crop tops are more fashionable than ever. In fact, I was sitting in a restaurant seat last week with a view of Franklin Street’s sidewalk when a cropped top fashionista strolled by. I immediately put my fork down! That trend may be a deal breaker for many mavens.

Take Your Style To New Lengths For Yet Another Season. – Maxi dresses continue to be hotter than ever. With so many options in prints, stripes and solids, you might need more than just one. Add some gladiator sandals and a fedora hat and hit the town. For more on the maxi, check out The Fashion Plate’s March piece titled MAXImum Style.

Black And White Is Big. – You know you’ve got this combination in your wardrobe, so pull it out and wear it with style. Or find one of the many sassy patterns and designs displayed in the black and white motif. The top four black and white purchases for The Fashion Plate this season are a sleeveless top with a high low hemline in a black and white chevron pattern, black cropped cotton pants with white tuxedo piping, black and white strappy patent leather wedges, and a black and white wide striped tank with orange and hot pink color blocking on the back.

Southern gentlemen rejoice! – The colorful suit for men is in – and no, we don’t mean navy or gray.

Go Flowy – Loose shaped palazzo pants are back this season in everything from bold prints (like the popular tribal print motif) to bright solids. Flowy shape and summer work well together for the season’s heat.

Fringe Finishes. – Purses and shoes are a great way to sport the fringe trend.

Printed Shorts – The Fashion Plate bought a bright pair at BlueTique on West Franklin Street. They’ll be perfect attire for Fridays on the Front Porch at the Carolina Inn this summer or Live and Local at 140 West Franklin.

Dazzling Blue – Designers used this blue hue on the spring runways, making it one of the most popular color trends of 2014. Dazzling Blue also plays a big role in the emerging aquatic trend this spring and summer.

These are a few of the hot trends for summer. Tell us what you plan to wear to beat the heat in style!
