We have finally hit some 90-degree days this summer in Chapelboro. They said it was one of the latest 90-degree inaugurations we’ve had in years. I have been OK with this. But now that sweltering heat is coming, it is time to think about water activities with your family. Think beyond the pool this summer. Think Jordan Lake.

Jordan Lake is a great, beautiful resource for us in Chapel Hill and Carrboro. Should you take advantage of it?

There are three swim areas and beaches that I have tried out over the years:

Seaforth Recreation Area
This is the largest and most popular area I have been to. It can get quite crowded but the place is well maintained. The beach is the biggest here, there are a lot of picnic tables, and there is a playground for the kids.

Parker’s Creek
This area is smaller but the fact that it’s closed off from any boat traffic makes it appealing to families with smaller children especially. The playground can get some sun but then the water is right there to cool off in!

Ebenezer Church
This was one of our favorite spots. The beach was well maintained, the playground is great (albeit out in the direct sun), and it doesn’t tend to get quite as crowded as Seaforth.

Some practical things to know before you go:

  1. None of Jordan Lake’s swim areas have lifeguards on duty. There are flotation devices available but you are swimming at your own risk.
  2. You will need to bring some cash to pay to get in to the park. It is $6 per car to gain entrance.
  3. This is a lake, not a chemically controlled pool. There will be fish in the water and bugs flying around. Enjoy it and be prepared with bug spray and sunscreen! Seeing some of the beautiful vistas across the Jordan Lake will be worth it.
  4. There are permanent bathroom facilities at all locations I mention above.
  5. Some of these areas also have campsites available for rent so why not make a full weekend trip out of this for your family. You can avoid a long, painful road trip and still get a family retreat.

One little side note: these beaches are public and open to everyone and anyone. The folks I have shared sand with have always been polite and accommodating. But smoking is allowed here (alcoholic beverages and glass containers are not). Let’s just all be polite, let people be who they are, and enjoy the North Carolina summer!

Stay cool off the 15/501 this hot season!
