Singer-songwriter Rhiannon Giddens, a Greensboro native, is joining the cast of Nashville.  She will be portraying Hanna Lee “Hallie” Jordan, “a young social worker who turns out to have the voice of an angel.”

Giddens shared the news on Twitter.  She tweeted a photo with Nashville star Charles Esten on Thursday.

The news was confirmed in a press release from CMT.  Nashville, a drama based on the country music industry, moved to CMT after a four-season run on ABC.  The fifth-season premiere will air on January 5th.

Rhiannon Giddens formed the Carolina Chocolate Drops, a Durham based old-time string band, in 2005.  Their 2010 album, Genuine Negro Jig, won the Grammy for Best Traditional Folk Album.  In 2015, Giddens released her debut solo album, Tomorrow is My Turn.  She was featured on Kill a Word, a song by another North Carolina artist, Eric Church, on Church’s 2015 album Mr. Misunderstood.
