9/7/17: Billy Joel “All About Soul”

Sometimes, these things make no sense. I just can’t explain why a particular song is floating around in my head. Like today, for example. Clear as a bell, I can hear a song by Billy Joel that I haven’t heard, or probably even thought about, in a couple decades.

Billy Joel has sold 82 and a half million albums, making him #6 on the shortlist of all-time bestselling musical artists. You can’t throw a rock in the music world without hitting a Billy Joel song, from “Piano Man” to “Just the Way You Are.” He’s a New York guy, one of the state’s favorite sons, having been born in Brooklyn and growing up on Long Island. Billy Joel is to New York as Springsteen is to New Jersey, and even went so far as to record a classic anthem in “New York State of Mind.”

Countless Billy Joel songs climbed the charts and stayed there, and you probably know a whole slew of them. “Movin’ Out,” “Only the Good Die Young,” “It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me,” “My Life,” Uptown Girl… it’s like the list never ends, for heaven’s sake! The song that’s in my head today is actually off an album he recorded back in 1993, as his final studio album. It was called “River of Dreams,” and the song was “All About Soul.” I’ve been carrying it around with me for all these years, and today it just came spilling out. I really love the song, I just can’t figure out how it got in my head today, of all days!
