7/13/17: The B-52’s “Love Shack”

If you’re going to party, you’ve gotta have some good party music! The song floating around my brain today is certainly party music! It’s “Love Shack,” by the B-52’s! It’s an energetic, bouncy, good-time tune by a New Wave band out of Athens, Georgia… another great campus town not unlike our own Chapel Hill.

Some people interpret the song in ways that are a little risqué, but I think the B-52’s were just trying to have a good time, and they certainly pulled that off! You can hear it in the recording… the studio must have looked like a party! There’s a really interesting thing about “Love Shack,” though. While recording the track, one of the singers, Cindy Wilson, screwed up during the take and kept singing when she wasn’t supposed to. They thought it sounded cool, so they kept it in. It’s the memorable bit near the end where she yells “Tin roof… rusted!” It’s one of the most misheard lyrics in music, with interpretations ranging from “Henry… busted!” to “dandruff… crusty!” A lot of people tried to work out if talking about a tin roof being rusted was a euphemism for being pregnant, enough that it even became slang for a little while… even if it wasn’t before.
