7/11/17: The Rolling Stones “Between a Rock and a Hard Place”

These things are random, sometimes. The music in my head occasionally is triggered by a memory, or maybe I heard it around somewhere. There’s always music floating around in my head, and this morning it was a great old rock n’ roll tune from the Stones, though it might not be one you’d expect.

Back in 1989, the Rolling Stones recorded an album called “Steel Wheels.” One of the song on there, “Between and Rock and a Hard Place,” stood out to me. It’s hard to tell exactly what the song is saying, both in terms of Jagger’s vocals and the lyrics themselves, but sometimes the “messages” in songs are overrated and overblown. In some cases, outside interpretation of music can be totally ridiculous! I don’t think songwriters are always trying to  cryptically say something. Sure, there are plenty of times when that’s exactly what’s happening, but often it’s just about finding something that rhymes or sounds good. Lyrics are part of the music, after all! They’ve got to fit, and sound musical. “Rock and a Hard Place” is just a good rock song, and I don’t care what it could or couldn’t mean — I just like the music! I like how it sounds, how it feels… and it rocks pretty hard!
