6/8/17: Heart “Barracuda”
Let’s talk about women who rock! I once saw a special exhibit at the EMP Museum in Seattle called “Women Who Rock!” that was on loan from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. It prominently featured rockers like Grace Slick, Pat Benetar, Stevie Nicks, Joan Jett, Janis Joplin and, of course, Ann & Nancy Wilson of Heart!
The Wilson Sisters can definitely rock, and we’ve discussed them here before, but songs like “Barracuda” are always worth coming back to. I can’t get them out of my head, and based on the amount of radio play Heart still gets, neither can anyone else! The sister singing lead, Ann, has an amazing voice for rock n’ roll and a fantastic stage presence, while Nancy tears it up on the guitar and contributes back-up vocals.
Ann has spoken in interviews after the fact that “Barracuda” is about a publicity stunt where Heart’s record label at the time spread rumors that implied the sisters were involved in an incestuous relationship in order to garner more attention for their music. Apparently, some guy was talking to her after a show and asked how her “lover” was. Ann assumed the man was talking about her boyfriend, who also managed the band, but he kept pushing the subject and eventually revealed he was talking about her sister Nancy!
Ann was understandably furious, and after finding out where the rumors started Heart immediately discarded the album they were working on and signed to another label. “Barracuda” was the response. “If the real thing don’t do the trick,” Ann yells, “you better make up something quick!” At least we got a hell of a song out of all this publicity nonsense, and Heart obviously made it out just fine.
