6/15/17: Al Green “Love and Happiness”

It’s not all that unusual for the Revered Al Green’s voice to be in my head, and it was there when I woke up this morning. I’ve been thinking about my favorite Al Green song, and it isn’t “Let’s Stay Together,” “Take Me to the River,” or “I’m Still in Love With You.” Those are all great, sure, but it’s “Love and Happiness” that does it for me every time.

Love will make you right, and love will make you do wrong. You know what I mean? A lot of Al Green’s songs sounded like he was preaching, testifying in front of a congregation! Makes sense, based on where the good Reverend would eventually end up, and one day I hope to visit his church in Memphis. It’s a sad story how he got there, though. The suicide of Mary White – his girlfriend at the time – drove him to reconsider his life and dedicate himself to ministry, a pursuit he’s followed ever since, all the way to preaching just outside of Graceland.

“Love and Happiness” shows you everything that’s great about Al Green. Once the groove gets going, it doesn’t stop! It brings back just enough of the old-style soul flavor from Green’s early days and builds on it with everything he’d learned over the past four albums. It’s classic. It’s Al Green. It’s love, and it’s happiness.
