6/13/17: Eddie Money “Two Tickets to Paradise”

Edward Joseph Mahoney. It’s easy to see where the stage name “Eddie Money” came from, especially since his self-titled debut album “Eddie Money” was released in 1977 and certified as “double platinum” in 1989!

Eddie made his name and his early money touring non-stop and playing live for enthusiastic audiences, and his first album was an attempt to capture that energy. His success in California’s bay area was largely due to the assistance of Bill Graham, a well-known agent, promoter, and producer at the time. Singles from “Eddie Money” charted well, with “Two Tickets to Paradise” and “Baby Hold On” being instant successes that were followed up with a cover of motown classic “You Really Got A Hold On Me” becoming an underground radio standard.

The lyrics “two tickets to paradise” actually directly reference Eddie’s girlfriend at the time. According to Eddie, her parents were against her dating a professional musician, hoping instead that she’d find a more suitable partner in the form of a doctor, lawyer, or other working professional.

Relationships with musicians aside, there are actually two versions of this tune! The first was released as a single, while the second — and vastly different — mix of the song was put on the album proper. There’s a whole lot of differences to listen for, from lead guitar changes and lyrical alterations to the actual mixing of the song itself. Give the original version of “Two Tickets to Paradise” a listen, and figure out if you’re ready to pack your bags and leave tonight.
