4/17/18: Looking Glass “Brandy”

Today’s song is one I really haven’t heard in a pretty good while.  It’s one I remember playing a lot on the radio back in 1972!  It was enormously popular at the time, and I always got folks calling in to request it.  It’s like the listeners just couldn’t get enough of it!  It was sort of a “one-hit wonder” by a group called Looking Glass. If you were a fan, the moment you hear those first few notes, the memories will just come flooding back to you. “Brandy” was about a barmaid in a busy harbour town on the West Coast.  “Brandy” was “a fine, fine girl,” as the song says, and no matter how much the lonely sailors flirted with her, she was preoccupied with thoughts of a long lost love. A sailor who had come through, striking up a strong chemistry with her, but then disappeared.  He had been long gone, but still, she dreamed of the time he might come back through again!

Remember the big song by Barry Manilow called “Mandy?” Well, that song was originally supposed to be entitled “Brandy,” but this Looking Glass tune came out and went all the way to #1 in the country, before Manilow released his song — so he changed his to “Mandy” and it went all the way to #1, as well.  Just a little trivial information about two songs that really had absolutely nothing to do with each other!

Anyway, “Brandy” is a song that still makes me smile when I hear it.  I hope it has the same effect on you!
