3/14/17: Bob Dylan “Like A Rolling Stone”

Robert Allen Zimmerman was in my head this morning. You know, Bob Dylan!

This American singer/songwriter is a 75-year-old icon, and has influenced the music and culture of the United States for more than half a century. He started out with strictly folk music, although the sound was certainly different. Dylan’s always been different, though. Some of his early songs, like “Blowing in the Wind” and “The Times, They Are a-Changin’” have stayed in our collective consciousness since we first heard them, and have helped to define the sound of folk as we know it today.

With that in mind, a lot of his fans weren’t too fond when Dylan went electric. I guess they got over it, but I’ve always love his songwriting over his singing. Certainly, part of the reason he sprang to everybody’s attention in addition to his prolific and philosophical songwriting style is the unique vocal style through which he communicated his ideas of social unrest, civil rights, free speech, and dissatisfaction with the status quo.

Bob Dylan has had an impact on so many talented musicians, and he’s played with a lot of ‘em as a result. To me, the quintessential Dylan song will always be “Like A Rolling Stone.” It was named the “greatest rock n’ roll song of all time” by Rolling Stone magazine. I don’t know about that, but it’s certainly a good one.
