2/9/18: Whitesnake “Here I Go Again”

Whitesnake 2014

Today it’s one of those big-hair rock and roll bands from the 80’s! WHITESNAKE came out of the UK, with David Coverdale on lead vocals.
He had just departed Deep Purple, and at first, a lot of their stuff sounded sort of like Deep Purple. Toward the end of the 70’s they started sounding a bit more commercial, and became a really successful arena rock band in the early part of the new decade. Whitesnake recorded a couple of albums that didn’t do a whole lot, but then, they started to gain some popularity here in the United States. In 1987, Whitesnake went into the studio and made its self-titled album that contained two songs destined to become giant hits.
There was “Here I Go Again” and also “Is This Love,” reaching #1 and #2, respectively, on the Billboard Hot 100. And the album went 8 times platinum!

My personal feeling is that Whitesnake would have been even more popular if the name of the group wasn’t so off-putting. Just a feeling on my part—I could be wrong. Anyway, back in those days, I didn’t give the band that much thought…but many years later, I was visiting my old best friend in my hometown for a high school reunion. Jim Maples is no longer with us, but he and I sang together a lot back in the old days, and we both absolutely loved music. Jim had a great singing voice, and I always respected his talent, and recognized he had a great ear for music. Anyway, one weekend, we’re in his truck riding around visiting some of the old places we used to go, when “Is This Love” comes on the radio, and he started singing along with it. For some reason, it really surprised me because it just didn’t seem like the kind of tune he would like. He was always more into soul music and more specifically, beach music. It was then that I really paid attention and finally realized what a great song it was…and is. Even now, when I hear it, it makes me think of my old friend.

Those 2 songs became even more popular because of their videos, which got lots of play on MTV. The star of those music videos was Tawny Kitaen. She and Coverdale were actually dating at the time, and went on to get married, even though the marriage didn’t last that long. When you watch this video, you’ll see why it got so much exposure back in the days when MTV (Music Television) actually played music. Imagine that! What a concept!
