2/12/18: Brandi Carlile “The Joke”

It’s unusual when I have a new song in my head, but that’s the case today. Music has a way of touching people, and this particular song has touched me in a big way. Especially when I look at it from the vantage point of a young person (yes, I know, that’s a bit of a stretch) who is feeling powerless, disenfranchised, unappreciated, and maybe even searching for an identity. “The Joke” is meant to be encouraging, uplifting, empowering, and inspiration to those young people who may fall into that category.

BRANDI CARLILE has been around for a while on the music scene. She grew up in the state of Washington, taught herself how to play piano and guitar, actually dropped out of high school to pursue a career in music (No! I would NOT recommend that to anyone!) and now at the age of 36 may be on the brink of becoming recognized as a mainstream star. She already has a devoted following, of course, and she’s recorded a half dozen albums already. She’s such a prolific songwriter. Brandi has had one song to be certified as a gold record since it’s sold more than 500,000 units….It’s called “The Story,” and is a real showstopper. Watch her perform it live on YouTube…that clip is from a live performance on “Austin City Limits.” And the song that’s in my head today is another incredibly dramatic and powerful tour de force! Combine her song lyrics with bombastic production and an amazing vocal performance, and it’s a song that sticks in your head for a while. At least that’s what happened with me. From the first time we started playing it here on 97.9 The Hill, it’s been stuck in my head constantly.

She’s not country. And she’s not rock and roll. It’s hard to categorize Brandi Carlile, but I’m predicting even bigger success for her in the future. Her music touches the heart. “THE JOKE” is the name of the song I’m talking about, and it’s on a brand new album coming out this week, called “By The Way, I Forgive You.” Check it out. And in the meantime, enjoy this one. I can’t get it out of my head. Maybe the same thing will happen to you!
