11/7/17: Peaches & Herb “Shake Your Groove Thing”
Don’t ask me why this song was in my head this morning, because I don’t know! It’s about as disco as you can get, and I’m not usually a big fan of disco music… but I still end up occasionally “shaking my groove thing” all the same. There is an interesting story behind these artists, though.
Peaches & Herb are a famous singing duo, and they’ve been around a long, long time. Actually, Herb Fame has been around a long time… with a variety of “Peaches” as his singing partner. Seven different women have filled the role, with the first one being Francine Hurd Barker, whose actual nickname was “Peaches,” She and Herb put out some mellow records, songs you’ll remember like “Close Your Eyes” and “For Your Love.” The original peaches died about 12 years ago, and Herb decided to keep the name alive.
The third Peaches was Linda Green, the voice on some of the duo’s biggest hit records. I’m sure you remember “Reunited (And It Feels So Good)” and that was all her. It’s a wonderful song, but it was the disco stylings of “Shake Your Groove Thing” that I woke up hearing this morning. It came out in 1978, right smack in the middle of the disco craze. Maybe it’ll be in your head now, too!
