Two local high school football teams are awaiting their playoff fate, even though the season is still in its early stages.
The News & Observer was first to report on Monday that Riverside and Cedar Ridge High Schools were going to be ruled ineligible for the state playoffs after the two teams got into a late-game brawl on Friday night in Hillsborough.
The game was being carried live on WCHL at the time of the altercation. WCHL’s Colin Schultz was on play-by-play for the game and described a play ending on the Riverside sideline late in the fourth quarter. Riverside had the game was well in hand with a 20-3 score line when the Cedar Ridge defense tackled the Riverside ball carrier into the visiting team’s sideline.
The North Carolina High School Athletic Association rules state that any team with three or more players ejected for fighting will not be allowed to compete in the postseason.
Cedar Ridge was off to a 3-0 start; the best start in school history.
Both teams will have an opportunity to appeal the decision.
A request for comment from Cedar Ridge officials was not returned on Monday.http://chapelboro.com/sports/high-school/friday-night-fight-between-cedar-ridge-and-riverside-could-mean-no-playoffs
All local high school football has been postponed this week as Tropical Storm Hermine is making its way through the southeastern United States.
The storm made landfall in Florida early Friday morning as a hurricane and could bring heavy rainfall to central North Carolina late Friday night and into Saturday morning.
Friday’s slate of games included East Chapel Hill High at Cedar Ridge, Riverside at Orange High and Chapel Hill High at Carrboro.
All three of those games have been rescheduled for six o’clock Monday evening to avoid any possible dangers from Hermine.

This weekend, the curtain goes up on “Beauty and the Beast,” Cedar Ridge High School‘s spring musical.
Featuring a gifted cast and inventive costumes, “Beauty and the Beast” is a stage adaptation of the classic Disney film about a selfish prince trapped in a cursed castle, an adventurous woman trapped in a small provincial town, and the love they come to share. (There is also a talking clock.)
Four of the student actors – Keegan Welford-Small (Beast), Sean Purner (Cogsworth), Kristi Lescinski (Belle), and Evynne Franklin (Mrs. Potts) – stopped by WCHL this week and discussed the show with Aaron Keck.
The show opened on Friday, April 15, and runs through Saturday, April 16, with showtimes at 7 pm both nights. Tickets are $15 at the door.http://chapelboro.com/news/pre-k-12-education/tale-as-old-as-time-beauty-and-the-beast-at-cedar-ridge-hs
Chapel Hill High School Football Field. A week from tonight, the lights will come on and the football season will kick off.
CHAPEL HILL – High school football kicks off one week from today, and WCHL and Chapelboro.com are bringing you two games each week this year.
For the first time, you’ll be able to choose which local team to listen to on Friday nights.
The season kicks off with the Carrboro Jaguars who made it all the way to the 2A State Championship game last year traveling to Hillsborough to battle the Cedar Ridge Red Wolves who make the jump to 3A football this year. You can hear the call from Paul Connell and Anthony Wellman on WCHL and Chapelboro.com.
And, exclusively on Chapelboro.com, the 3A Chapel Hill Tigers host the 4A Riverside Pirates. The Tigers are coming off their 9-4 finish last season in which they were knocked out of the state playoffs in the second round. Walter Storholt and Jeff Hamlin join the broadcast team to bring you that game from Chapel Hill.
All the action begins next Friday at 6:30 p.m. with the return of The Grid hosted by Ran Northam in which you can hear comments from all of the area’s coaches. Then at 7:00 p.m., you choose which game you want to listen to: Carrboro at Cedar Ridge or Riverside at Chapel Hill.
