Panthers Place RB Jonathan Stewart On PUP List

CHARLOTTE – Panthers coach Ron Rivera says the team has placed Jonathan Stewart on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, meaning the veteran running back will miss at least the first six weeks of the season.

Carolina also placed guard Edmund Kugbila, the team’s fourth-round draft pick, on injured reserve Tuesday with a knee injury and waived-injured defensive tackle Frank Kearse and wide receiver Joe Adams.

Stewart says his goal is to return for Carolina’s Oct. 20 game against the St. Louis Rams.

Stewart hasn’t practiced with the Panthers since undergoing offseason surgery on both ankles. He says his right ankle remains a problem.

The decision likely means more playing time for DeAngelo Williams, the franchise’s all-time leading rusher, and opens a roster spot for either Tauren Poole or Armond Smith.

Panthers Look To End Long Playoff Drought In 2013

CHARLOTTE – The Panthers have been a dynamite team the last two years in post-Thanksgiving Day games with a combined 9-3 record. The problem for Carolina is those games haven’t mattered much.

By starting each of the last two years 2-8, the Panthers have rendered the season’s stretch run meaningless when it comes to the playoffs.

In fact, Carolina fans haven’t had much to be excited about in December in quite some time. The Panthers haven’t been to the postseason since 2008 and haven’t won a playoff game since 2005.

Tight end Greg Olsen says this year’s team is out to change that.

Olsen says, “We can’t put ourselves in that hole and think a late six-game push is going to put us over the top when you start the season 2-8.”

Panthers Sign Travelle Wharton

CHARLOTTE – The Carolina Panthers have signed free agent offensive lineman Travelle Wharton.

Wharton played the first eight seasons (2004-11) of his NFL career with the Panthers after being selected by the team in the third round of the 2004 draft. Wharton signed with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2012 before suffering a knee injury and missing the season.

Wharton started all 99 games he played for the Panthers.

Panthers Score 4 TDs On Returns, Beat Ravens 34-27

BALTIMORE – Ted Ginn Jr. returned a punt 74 yards for a touchdown and the Carolina Panthers’ defense scored three times in a 34-27 preseason victory over the mistake-prone Baltimore Ravens on Thursday night.

Drayton Florence took an interception 71 yards into the end zone, Thomas Davis scored on a 2-yard fumble return and linebacker Luke Kuechly picked off another of Joe Flacco’ passes late in the second quarter to set up a 54-yard field goal by Graham Gano for a 24-7 lead.

Carolina (2-1) had only 67 yards in offense before halftime, yet reeled off 24 straight points after Baltimore (2-1) scored on its first possession.

Late in the third quarter, D.J. Moore intercepted a pass by Tyrod Taylor and ran 31 yards for a touchdown to make it 34-17.

Flacco, the Super Bowl MVP, played into the third quarter and went 18 for 24 for 169 yards and a touchdown. In three preseason games, he has two TD passes and three interceptions.
