The Riverside Durham Pirates and the Chapel Hill Tigers met for a cross town non-conference match up on Thursday, April 20th. The contest was played at Chapel Hill High School with a first pitch of 7:03 p.m. and the WCHL broadcast crew was there for the play by play. A great crowd at Tiger field as the Tiger faithful welcomed the WCHL crew and a great time was had by all. Coach Lee Land’s Tigers led by shortstop Colin Liebe’s 3 hit evening plated 4 runs in the 1st inning and never looked back as the Tigers defeated the Pirates 7 – 1.

Tiger starting pitcher Ryan Lonegan pitched 4 solid innings allowing only 1 run on 4 hits while walking 1 and striking out 4. Tiger ace Jake Smith pitched the remaining 3 innings allowing only 1 hit and striking out 4 in his outing. Tiger junior Drew Govert and sophomore Tim White each had 2 hits and 1 RBI apiece for Chapel Hill. Shortstop Colin Liebe provided 3 hits in 4 plate attempts with 4 RBI’s while also scoring a run. Ryan Lonegan, Tyler Tachman, and Anthony Costellano each had hits for the Tigers in the win.

Sophomore Chris Allen was the starting pitcher for coach Doug Simmon’s Pirates before being injured on a sharply batted ball back to the mound in the first inning. Senior Kimball Toone replaced Allen and pitched the remainder of the contest for Riverside Durham. Sophomore Anthony Rivera provided a multi hit night for the Pirates. Sophomore Ray Palma, senior Chris Crabtree, and sophomore Kimball Toone each had hits for the Pirates.

The Chapel Hill Tigers face their cross town rivals the East Chapel Hill Wildcats on April 26th where both teams are raising money for children’s cancer.

The Pirates of Riverside Durham face Hillside tomorrow evening at 7:00 in a 6 – 4A conference match up.

WCHL’s next high school baseball broadcast will be May 4th between the Northside Chargers and the Chapel Hill Tigers from Tiger field with a first pitch of 7:03.
