URBANA, IL – The No. 2 UNC women’s tennis team’s season came to an end Sunday when it fell to UCLA 4-1 in the NCAA quarterfinals.

The Tar Heels started out with the 1-0 lead after a strong doubles performance, and though singles play was close early, the Bruins put on the heat late.

UCLA’s No. 20 ranked Kyle McPhillips was the first to take down UNC’s No. 49 ranked Zoe De Bruycker 6-4, 6-1. Carolina’s No. 7 ranked Gina Suarez-Malaguti took the first set to a 7-5 decision, but couldn’t overcome No. 3 ranked Robin Anderson who took the score to 2-1, UCLA.

UNC freshman and No. 39 ranked Whitney Kay couldn’t overcome the upset run by unranked Pamela Montez, 6-4, 6-4. The Bruins closed out the match with a 5-7, 7-5, 6-3 win by No. 93 ranked Catherine Harrison against unranked Lauren McHale for the 4-1 victory.

With the loss, Carolina turns its attention to the NCAA singles tournament, which begins Wednesday. Four Tar Heels will compete, and the draws for that event will be announced later this week.
