No matter where UNC senior attacker Ela Hazar passed the ball on Saturday afternoon, the next destination after that was a given: the goal.

Hazar broke the Tar Heel women’s lacrosse single-game record with eight assists, as the fourth-ranked UNC women’s lacrosse team rolled to an 18-13 victory over No. 9 Northwestern on the road.

In the process, Hazar also moved into first place in the program’s all-time leaderboards for assists with 98–passing the previous mark of 92 set by Becky Lynch from 2009-12.

Katie Hoeg added four goals and three assists for the Tar Heels (6-2), while Marie McCool and Jamie Ortega each added three goals apiece.

Northwestern (5-3) was led by four goals from both Selena Lasota and Claire Quinn.

The Wildcats held an 8-7 lead at halftime and were competitive for most of the day, but a 5-0 run by the Tar Heels late in the second half ultimately erased any doubt surrounding the outcome.

“It was a total team win—we got contributions from so many players on the field,” UNC head coach Jenny Levy said afterwards.  “The heart and fire we attacked the second half with was the margin of victory and we need to do this for 60 minutes next game.”
