Playing on the road in Charlottesville this weekend, the No. 21 UNC baseball team was unable to muster any kind of offense in Friday’s series opener against the Virginia Cavaliers–getting shut out in a 4-0 loss.

The Tar Heels (22-12, 10-6 ACC) tallied just seven hits in the game, with Ike Freeman the only player on the team to record two hits.

Virginia (20-14, 7-9 ACC) kicked off the scoring in the home half of the second inning against UNC starter Tyler Baum, using a pair of doubles and a wild pitch to help bring across a pair of runs.

An RBI single in the third inning from Alex Tappen put the home side ahead 3-0, while another run in the bottom of the sixth gave the game its final score.

For Baum, the Tar Heels sophomore right-hander, the game represented the first loss he’s taken on his record to this point in his collegiate career after starting 10-0.

Third baseman Kyle Datres extended his team-leading hitting streak to 14 games, but it wouldn’t be enough to overcome an 0-for-5 performance as a team with runners in scoring position.

The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday due to weather concerns for Sunday.
